Down Syndrome

Children with Down syndrome bring joy, warmth and determination to everything they do. Our therapy programmes celebrate who they are while helping them reach every milestone on their own timeline.

Understanding Down Syndrome

What is Down Syndrome?

Down syndrome (Trisomy 21) is a chromosomal condition caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21. It is the most common chromosomal condition in humans, occurring in approximately 1 in 700 births. Down syndrome affects physical development, cognitive abilities, and health in ways that vary significantly from person to person.

Children with Down syndrome typically have some level of intellectual disability, characteristic physical features, and may experience associated health conditions including congenital heart defects, hearing loss, thyroid conditions, and vision problems. However, the range of abilities is extremely wide — many adults with Down syndrome live semi-independently, hold jobs, and have rich social lives.

At Reach N Rise, we begin therapy as early as possible and continue throughout development. Early intervention has a profound impact on cognitive, speech, motor and social development outcomes for children with Down syndrome, and our family-centred approach ensures parents are full partners in the therapy process.
